Eluvio: How Blockchain Fabric Can Be Used to Securely Deliver Streamed Content

Eluvio’s Blockchain Content Fabric is reshaping the streaming sector, providing unprecedented security and transparency, the company said at the Content Protection Summit (CPS) @ NAB 2024 in Las Vegas on April 13.

During the session “Using Blockchain Fabric to Securely Deliver Streaming Content,” Serban Simu, president and co-founder of Eluv.io, highlighted how a blockchain-based solution can, and does, deliver streaming assets securely.

Simu first gave a brief overview of the Eluvio Content Fabric overall, noting it is a “global scale media distribution platform that replaces the traditional file- based protocols.”

The Content Fabric “lays on top of the basic transactions, signatures, and so on, to build content-specific protocols,” he told attendees.

Simu went on to talk about content distribution security as it pertains to both the traditional pipeline content delivery network (CDN) “sort of model, as well as the Content Fabric.”

He later discussed content verification, calling that “maybe even more relevant [based on] a couple of the talks we had before and particularly because this is one of the ways you can assert your content correctness in the face of both the human physical threats as well as the outer threats.”

He explained that the Content Fabric is an open “network of nodes inspired [by] the internet itself” and “accomplishes all the needs of content distribution in a single protocol, eliminating the need for file copies and more deadlocks to your workflows.”

Just ahead of the 2023 NAB, Eluvio announced a complete set of capabilities enabling direct sell-through, engagement and streaming of premium video directly from publisher to consumer.

At the time, it said the Eluvio Blockchain Content Fabric is a “utility blockchain network for owner-controlled storage, distribution, and monetization of video, music, and other digital content at scale.”

It “enables simplified, cost-efficient, and just-in-time video distribution from the source (stream or file), without making file copies – and without the use of costly third-party cloud storage, transcoding, OVP, or CDN providers,” the company said at the time.

Additionally at NAB 2024, Eluvio introduced the new Casablanca release and new Creator Studio, Content Analytics and AI Content Understanding apps built on the Content Fabric. The Casablanca release version extends the Content Fabric with provable mass scale performance and deterministic low-latency live & VoD adaptive bitrate streaming (

At CPS @ NAB 2024, Simu said: “Attacks on the content distribution infrastructure can happen at any [point]. Securing these is very difficult because every one of these infrastructures is different. It’s potentially multiple vendors’ transcoding, multiple transcoding steps, and DRM and encryption steps as one package, or a different batch of DRM and pages, and so on. So, securing each of these sort of silos is difficult…. By contrast, the Content Fabric simplifies it in the sense that the infrastructure is always the same. All of these nodes are the same, and the content is always encrypted…. This standardizes content distribution infrastructure.”

CPS was presented by Fortinet, with sponsorship by AMD, Convergent, Digital Silence, NAGRA, Prime Focus Technologies, Eluv.io and EIDR, in association with the NAB Show. The event was produced by MESA and the CDSA.
