Blackhawks sweep East Wilkes on pitch

MILLERS CREEK —East Wilkes’ girls soccer team remained winless in the young season after a 5-0 loss to West Wilkes at Window World Field on Monday evening.

The Blackhawks also defeated the Cardinals 4-1 at Ebb Tharpe Field in the two teams’ season opener.

In the opener, East Wilkes led 1-0 in the first half on a Savannah Sparks goal but the Blackhawks took control with two goals before halftime and added two more in the second half.

Zetta Charles was solid in goal as the junior keeper collected 25 saves.

During Monday’s match, West Wilkes (3-1) took control early behind a pair of goals from Emma Golds in the third and 11th minutes to lead 3-0 at halftime. Libby Harbour added West’s third goal of the half.

East Wilkes had a chance to notch an early equalizer after the Blackhawks were called for a hand ball in the 10th minute. But the Cardinals couldn’t capitalize as Maggie Reece’s penalty kick was stopped by West keeper Morgan Wood.

Golds added two more goals in the 41st and 51st minutes.

Sandwiched between the matches with the Blackhawks, East Wilkes (0-4) dropped a 9-0 decision to Surry Central, which also won the rematch 9-0 on Tuesday evening. Cardinals will return to the pitch on Thursday at Alexander Central.

Elkin squeeze past Vikings on the road, drop home opener

The Buckin’ Elks were victorious in their 2023 season opener behind a 3-2 win over North Wilkes on Monday evening at Raner Wiles Stadium.

Elkin fell in its home opener Tuesday night in a 3-1 defeat to West Wilkes. The Buckin’ Elks will look to break back into the win when they host East Surry on Thursday evening at 5:30.

Knights top Forbush in opener

The Falcons opened up their season on Monday night with a 5-1 defeat against North Davidson.

Forbush will look to break into the win column when it hosts North Wilkes in its Foothills 2A Conference opener on Wednesday. They’ll turn around and travel to Starmount on Friday evening before traveling to Elkin next Monday.
